| Comments: | Identified as a possible ahupuaa on the circa-1880s Hawaiian Government Survey map of Kaupo. Located mauka of Nuu Bay. Archaeologist Winslow Walker refers to “a small gulch Kailiili” in his field notes from a 1929 survey of Kaupo, noting the gulch as the location of the petroglyphs at Nuu. Walker also described a heiau: "Heiau at Kailiili. Location: A quarter of a mile up from the shore on top of a small hill in the center of the valley. The trail passes by the foot of it. Description: A large heiau measuring 50 x 124 feet, walls 6 feet thick and 4 to 5 feet high. It is built of rough lava construction with pebbles and coral in its pavements. Cattle have tramped over much of the interior destroying its outlines. There is a high platform at the south and one at the west." |
