("Hanau Kupanaha", Ka Nupepa Kuokoa, February 27, 1864)
We are informed through a letter from our friend M. K. Adamu of Kaupo, East Maui of a woman and a strange birth, and here is what he wrote:
“On January 15, a woman at Waiha gave birth to three children. The first was a Chinese child whose skin was scaly, as caused by drinking awa. The second was a lizard child one foot long. This was followed by a cowry shell, being the third child of this woman. It must have been a strange partner to have made inside this woman a true Chinese person; a lizard, a being which lives in the jungle; and a cowry shell, a sea creature.”
