("Na Mea Hou Kuloko", Ke Au Okoa, September 7, 1871)

Joshua Ahulii of Pukaauhuhu, Kaupo, Maui, has written to us about heavy rains and winds on Maui. The waters took so much mud out to sea that it looked like newly created land. Off Waiopai in Kaupo, the size of the mud patch was the size of four square rods. 1

Below is the text of the original Hawaiian article:

NA MEA HOU KULOKO.

Ua kakau mai o Iosua Ahulii o Pukaauhuhu, Kaupo, Maui, iloko iho nei o ka wa ua nui a me ka makani ma Maui, ua hookahe ia aku e ka wai na lepo o ka aina a ku i kai ; ua kohu aina hou i ka nana aku. Aia makai ae o Waiopai i Kaupo, i kona ana ana ua like ka me eha roda kuea ka nui o ua aina hou nei.

  1. A rod being 16.5 feet, so approximately 65 square feet of area.
