Naaieono of Kula, Maui reports of a great famine at Nuu, Kaupo, and of panini cactus fruit being cooked in kettles as a drink to allay the intense hunger that has caused sunken eyes.

Word has come from W. A. Kala of Nuu, Kaupo, Maui, about heat causing a famine there, but which has already been explained by Mr. Naaieono. We offer our thanks to you for sending this to our precious1.
