Intended to shoot dog but killed Vieira's cow

Posted on by Kawika Gregoire

(The Maui News, September 24, 1915)

Mitukolo, a Hawaiian at Kaupo, after a little sweating by County Attorney Bevins, on Tuesday confessed that he was responsible for the death of a cow owned by Manuel Vieira, the ranchman, of the same district. He was able to convince the arm of the law, as well as the owner of the cow, that the shooting was accidental, and the matter was thereupon allowed to drop. Mitukolo explained that he had been trying to kill a dog which had been attracted by some hides he had hung out to dry, and in the darkness had let drive with his shotgun at what turned out to be the cow. The cow’s foreleg had been practically torn off by the heavy discharge, fired at close range, and the animal had shortly after bled to death.
