Wildfire on Haleakala

Posted on by Kawika Gregoire

("A ke Ahi Opala Iluna o Haleakala", Ke Alakai o Hawaii, October 12, 1933)

WAILUKU, Maui, Oct. 7—A wildfire on the Paliku side of Haleakala Crater, spotted from the western side of Kaupo, is a threat if it continues down the mountain to Hana town. If it travels west, it could be a danger to the village of Nuu.

The fire was burning fiercely as of Friday night.

Dwight Baldwin1 took 25 men up to try to extinguish the fire. William Crossby has begun to ascend the arduous path around the fire to try and obtain water to fight the blaze.
