My Dear Husband Has Passed Away
("Kuu Kane Aloha Ua Hala", Kuokoa Home Rula, January 15, 1909)
Mr. Editor.
Greetings.—
Please insert this in the Nupepa Kuokoa Home Rula: On Nov. 22, 1908,1 at 4 p.m., Makalii (male) departed from life in this earthly world and returned to the other realm, fulfilling the words of the Good Book that dust shall return to the earth and the spirit to the One who made it.2
He has left me—his wife—and our four children to mourn him in this world. He was 47 years old when he passed on. Sickness wasted him away for over 3 weeks. He was born at Kaupo, Maui. It is with heavy sorrow that I write these thoughts to inform my husband’s community.
With regards. I being the wife who has lost her husband.
Mrs. Naoka Makalii.
