Miss Makanui Haupu Has Passed
("O Miss Makanui Haupu Ua Hala", Nupepa Kuokoa, September 12, 1913)
Mr. Editor of the Nupepa Kuokoa, greetings:—Please be so kind as to allow space in the darling of the nation1 for the topic above so that you may flash like lightning from where the sun rises at Haehae to where it sets at Lehua and inform the friends and acquaintances of our dear departed sister.2
We were sitting around relaxing without a clue when the sad news arrived. We were told that it had been weeks since our beloved one had died. We are filled with grief for our sister, since we toiled together from the time she was young until she grew up. When the two of us moved to this land,3 she went to live with her foster parents in Kaupo, and from there resided in Kihei and then moved to Keahua with her biological parents.4 There she released her burden, ending the suffering of this life.
She was a good-natured daughter, heeding the words of her parents and doing the right thing.
With great appreciation for the editor, and regards to the young typesetters.

Note: The death month of August 1913 is an estimate based on the date of the article and the fact that Makanui Haupu died a few weeks before the writers received the news. Lucy Kahunanui was about 33 years old in August 1913, so Haupu may have been in her mid- to late 30s when she passed away.
Below is the obituary in the original Hawaiian:
