A Heavy Burden of Sorrow
("He Ukana Luuluu Me Ke Kaumaha", Nupepa Kuokoa, January 30, 1914)
Mr. Editor of the Kuokoa. Greetings:—Please allow me space in the Beloved of the Nation1 for the matter referenced above, to inform the numerous acquaintances, friends and family of my beloved mother, those who live from where the sun rises at Haehae to where it sets at Lehua, that she has passed away, lost to the invisible beyond of Kane!
At 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, the angel of death struck and snatched the final breath of my mother, Mrs. Rose Kailikea Marciel, at Kipahulu, leaving the mortal remains for me and my family to grieve. What sorrow!
My beloved mother was born in Kahikinui from the loins of her father Kekaha and her mother Haole on April 16, 1857. Thus, she had attained 56 years, 8 months and 28 days when she passed away.
Kahikinui was where she lived and married my father, Antone Vieira Marciel, on April 20, 1879. From their loins came nine children: three daughters and six sons. Death claimed two daughters and two sons, leaving four sons and one daughter. My mother endured 7 months of illness before passing. What grief!
She was a kind and loving mother. She cared for her family with an open heart. Her friends and acquaintances knew she could be counted on for help.
Friends and acquaintances of my mother, her kind acts towards you have forever ceased.
At her funeral, family, acquaintances and friends gathered and held a procession to her gravesite, the final resting place of us all. Thus came to pass the words of the Scriptures, “Death is that which parts."2 Glory to Father in heaven. He gave, and He hath taken away.3
I offer my eternal thanks to my mother’s friends for preparing the feast. The boundless generosity of these two left all sated. My gratitude as well to those who showered flowers on the body of my beloved mother, as well as to family and friends.
Please accept my eternal gratitude, and may the Almighty Father attend us all.
Mournfully,
JOS. V. MARCIEL
