My Husband, the Rev. D. Murray, Has Passed
("O Kuu Kane Rev. D. Murray Ua Hala", Nupepa Kuokoa, January 26, 1917)
Mr. Editor Hanohano1—Please grant space in your treasure for my eulogy for my husband, the Rev. David Murray, who has left me, his wifely companion, and our beloved lei of a daughter who has lost her father. However, our Father in heaven shall remove all pain, since in the words of our Father, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”2
The Rev. D. Murray was a pastor much beloved by his fellow servants doing God’s work. The Rev. D. Murray was born in 1840 in a different land and traveled to Hawaii and lived here in order to preach the word of God to the Hawaiian people. Therefore, I would like to offer my gratitude to all who came and joined me in my time of grief for my dear husband, the Rev. D. Murray. May God bless every last one of you.
We were joined in the covenant of marriage by the Rev. H. K. Poepoe in 1906. Thus, we spent 11 years living in love’s embrace before he left me, his dear wife, in sadness.
The Rev. D. Murray served as pastor of the church of Kaupo for seven years. He performed many beneficial acts for this parish and worked hard until the church of this place was in good shape. Thus, the members of this church have not forgotten him. He did many good deeds, and their love for him will never be forgotten.
The Rev. D. Murray rests in the embrace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I—the widowed Mrs. D. Murray—and Ane Murray would like to send our heartfelt thanks to the sisters of Iwilei for the support they gave in the form of bouquets for my beloved husband, the Rev. D. Murray, as well as to the parent church for providing a place to bury my husband in Pauoa Cemetery.
I will never forget your good deeds. May God be with you all, as well as with me, the wife who has lost her husband.
MRS. KAILI MURRAY.
Honolulu, Jan. 26, 1917.
Note: The age at death of 76 is an estimate based on the assumption that Murray's birthday was not in January. Alternately, he would have been 77 when he passed away.
Below is the obituary in the original Hawaiian:
