Veteran Rancher of Kaupo Passes
(Maui News, July 10, 1929)
When Antone V. Marciel died last Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herman Lake1, there passed from life’s roster another of Maui’s pioneers.
Antone Marciel2 was 91 years old3 and into that almost a century he crowded a world of activities. He was born at Pico, Azores, on March 12, 1838,4 and at the age of 21 left the Azores on a whaling cruise to the Arctic regions. Six years he spent in whaling. In 1865, when the United States was still engaged in civil strife, the ship he was on became ice-bound. He along with others of the crew were transferred to the Kohola, the smallest of the whaling vessels and after months of sailing arrived in Honolulu. For a short time he worked on the Kuliouou Ranch, near Koko Head.
Marciel then came to Maui and worked on the Kahikinui Ranch, then under lease to Paoko. He stayed on this job until 1889 when he purchased the ranch at Kaupo, where he had active charge until the day of his death.
There was a large attendance of friends at the funeral which was held last Friday from Saint Anthony’s Church. Surviving the deceased are: Anthony, rancher at Kaupo, Joseph, superintendent of Kaupo waterworks, John, with the Wailuku Sugar Company and a captain in the national guards, Mrs. Herman Lake, of Wailuku, and Francis, superintendent of the Hana Waterworks.
