Comments: | Mountain gap in the crater rim above Kaupo. A legend published in Ka Nupepa Kuokoa in August 1922, says that the gods Kane and Kanaloa created Kaupo Gap: "Ua hele mai keia mau akua ahiki iuka o Kaupo i kahi i kapaia i keia la ke 'Kaupo Gap'. Ia mau la he pali paapu wale no ia, a i ka hiki ana o keia mau akua ilaila, na laua i wawahi keia pali a lilo ae i pali awawa, a ke waiho nei keia pali awawa ahiki i keia la." (These gods went to the uplands of Kaupo to the place now called 'Kaupo Gap'. In those days it was a solid cliff. When these gods got there, they smashed the cliff and made a gap that remains to this day.) |
