Feature: | Ahupuaa, cape, heiau |
Comments: | Identified as an ahupuaa on the circa-1880s Hawaiian Government Survey map of Kaupo. Today, Kou generally refers to the cape at the shoreline (e.g., U.S. Geological Survey maps). The large heiau on the cape at Kou is commonly referred to as Kou Heiau. However, archaeologist Winslow Walker in 1929 recorded the site as “Large heiau at Kou” in his field notes. Uranium–thorium dating by archaeologist Patrick Kirch indicates that the heiau may date to the 11th century. |
