Lanikaula

Feature:Heiau
Comments:Heiau described by archaeologist Winslow Walker following a survey of Kaupo in 1929: "Lanikaula Heiau. Location: At Luakauhi just behind the Kaupo Post Office. Description: An open platform about 45 feet square without walls or enclosures. The front toward the sea is terraced to a height of 12 feet. A terrace platform at the south corner is only 6 inches below the main platform. No coral or pebbles seen. Informant J. Keawe said the name Lanikaula was given to the heiau by its builders, who came from Molokai bringing a small kukui tree from Lanikaula on that island. There is a large kukui tree which shades the front of the heiau, but other Kaupo natives laughed at this explanation for the name."
