(Māʻua)
Feature: | Undefined place, village |
Comments: | Place in the uplands of Kaupo near the top of the road to the Kaupo Ranch headquarters. Identified on the circa-1880s Hawaiian Government Survey map of Kaupo. Erdmann Dwight Baldwin (1859-1942) called the area a village in his book Personal Recollection of My Life: "The path [to Haleakala Crater] leaves the main road in Kaupo near Manawainui gulch and winds up through Maua Village." Historian Moses Manu mentions Maua in the legend “He Moolelo Kaao no ke Kaua nui Weliweli mawaena o Pelekeahialoa a me Wakakeakaikawai”, published in the newspaper Ka Loea Kalaiaina in September 1899: "She [the goddess Pele] went visiting below Paukela, Naholaku and Maua. There were broken bubbles in the lava beds from above Maua to Kumunui and all the way to Paukela." Thomas Thrum in his 1917 "Hawaiian Annual" writes the following: "Securing the help of an old native we were led to the heiau of Haleokane, at Maua." Archaeologist Kenneth Emory wrote the following during a visit to Kaupo in May 1922: "Maua — where Pooahi [Joseph Poouahi] stays." Diacretical spelling comes from Kaupo natives Josephine Kealoha Marciel and Daniel Kawaiaea. |
