Spelled "Pihanakawai" in an announcement in Ka Nupepa Kuokoa in January 1883: "Owau o ka mea nona ka inoa malalo iho, ke papa, a ke hookapu loa aku nei au i kuu mau aina o Pihanakawai, Niumalu, a me Kumukahi, e waiho nei ma Kaupo Mokupuni o Maui." (I, the undersigned, am placing my lands in Pihanakawai, Niumalu, and Kumukahi, in Kaupo, Maui, off-limits.)
