Pokau

Feature:Undefined place
Comments:Unidentified place in western Kaupo mentioned in an article in the Maui News on July 23, 1949: "The Maui Police Department listed its first accidental death victim of the Tri-Isles for 1949 when 18-year-old Albert Moniz of Kula was reported to have passed away after being accidentally shot in the abdomen with a carbine rifle handled by George Ventura, also of Kula, while on a goat-hunting trip in Pokau, Kaupo, on Thursday evening. Following the tragedy, which occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sgt. Leslie Medeiros of the Hana District informed the Wailuku station that the party was at the Haleakala Ranch cabin and were attempting to bring the body in on a make-shift stretcher. Early Friday morning, the Wailuku unit received another report of the death of Moniz at 8 p.m. Thursday from a gun-shot discharged by Ventura, who is a nephew of the deceased, while hunting goats at Pokau, seven miles off the main highway."
