Feature: | Heiau, point |
Alternate spelling: | Puuhilele |
Comments: | Hillside area and point east of Waiuha Bay. Location of a heiau described by archaeologist Winslow Walker in a 1929 survey of Kaupo: "Heiau at Puhilele. Location: on top of the hill overlooking Waiuha to the west. Description: A walled heiau of good size, 80 x 90 feet, greatest dimensions. The inner court appears sunken as it is 8 feet below the east wall. There are raised platforms along its sides which give it the further the impression of a small theatre. These terraces are 3 feet high. The east wall is 8 feet thick and has a definite jog at the corner, but the west wall is irregular. There are several outside terraces and a slope of 20 feet at the S.W. corner. Across the top of the north wall runs a trail of stepping-stones which descends to a large mango tree below the hill. Nearby are some small caves probably intended for pigs." Walker alternated between the spellings "Puuhilele" (e.g., field notes, heiau site plan) and "Puhilele" (e.g., final manuscript). |
