| Comments: | Likely an ahupuaa of Kaupo, but not identified on the circa-1880s Hawaiian Government Survey map of Kaupo. Occasionally spelled Waiopae. Bishop Museum researcher Thomas Maunupau, who visited Kaupo in May 1922, used the spelling Manowaiopae. Diacretical spelling is Waiopaʻi according to a 1931 obituary in the newspaper Ke Alakai o Hawaii. Archaeologist Alex Baer considered Waiopai the westernmost ahupuaa in Kaupo in his doctoral dissertation. East Maui historian Moses Manu used the spelling Waiopai in the legend of Keomelemele (1885). |
