(Waiūhā)
Feature: | Bay |
Comments: | Broad bay between Muliwai (Manawainui river mouth) and Makaakini Point. Diacretical spelling provided by Kaupo natives Wilhelmina Marciel Atai (personal communication) and Nahale Piimauna (via the book "Sites of Maui"). Following a visit to Waiuha in 1929, archaeologist Winslow Walker reported finding the ruins of six fishermen's huts and canoe sheds, a large stone used for grinding adzes, and a stone-lined well. According to Walker, people last lived at Waiuha around 1910. An article in the newspaper Ka Hae Hawaii on July 23, 1856, describes a canoe capsizing shortly after setting out from Waiuha for Hawaii Island. |
