(Nuʻanuʻaloa)
Feature: | Gulch |
Alternate name: | Nuunuuloa (Nuʻunuʻuloa) |
Comments: | Deeply incised gulch west of Mokuia Point. Identified on the circa-1880s Hawaiian Government Survey map of Kaupo and on U.S. Geological Survey maps. Land Commission Award 10157B (1854) mentioned taro patches in Nuanualoa. In Ka Nupepa Kuokoa in October 1894, a visitor described Nuanualoa: "He mau la loihi i hoohala ia ma ke awawa malu o Nu’anu’aloa, e walea ana i ka nana i kona mau kakai pali uliuli, a ma na hora ao ka pilina o ke ao e pa iho ana ke aheahe makani kehau huihui mauka iho. Ea, nanea maoli kakou i keia awawa hohonu. He nui na mea e oluolu ai ke kino, oia hoi na mea o ke kai, a me na mea o ka wai, ku ka paila, a e no’u a mokaki, ke alawa ae oe ma o a maanei, he pali, huli ae oe i kai he ohuku ale, a ke leha ae kou mau maka iluna, aia na hoku o ka lani e imoimo iho ana." (We spent many days in the peaceful valley of Nu’anu’aloa, passing time looking at its rows of dark cliffs. In the early dawn hours the wind would blow cold mist in the uplands. We were truly at peace in this deep valley. There were many things here to satisfy the body: products of the sea and from freshwater all piled up to gorge on and discard. There were cliffs as you looked all around. Turning to the sea you would see the surging waves. If your eyes glanced up, there were the stars twinkling in the heavens.) Alternate name Nuunuuloa provided by Kaupo native Daniel Kawaiaea. |
