| Comments: | Area at the seaward base of Puu Maneoneo, along with the neighboring bay. Area contains a spring that flows to this day. Traditions attribute the opening of the spring to the gods Kane and Kanaloa (e.g., articles in the newspaper Ka Nupepa Kuokoa on Jan. 12, 1867, and Aug. 3, 1922). Mentioned in a song published in Ka Nupepa Kuokoa in 1903: "He aloha kahi wai o Waiu, Ia wai lelehune mai i ka pali. Ilaila au i ike iho ai, Ia wai hui konikoni i ka puu." (Love for the water of Waiu, the water that gushes from the cliff. There I experienced the cool water that tingles the throat.) The Waiu area is also called Kahauwiki. |
