| Comments: | Place described by archaeologist Winslow Walker in his field notes from a survey of Kaupo in 1929: "KaLaeoKailio Region. Tradition: Kamehameha is said to have landed here from Hawaii on a raid. There was some kind of skirmish when he landed and he put up an oar to save his face. That act finished the tapu which prevented men and women traveling together on the road. Particulars could not be obtained. At a place called Aialii (where-the-chiefs-eats) the Hawaii chiefs ate their first meal in Kaupo. It was referred to as a heiau, but the only indication of it was a. small platform 25 x 30 feet which showed coral and pebbles. It was probably only a house site." |
