Feature: | River mouth |
Comments: | River mouth of Manawainui stream. Identified on the circa-1880s Hawaiian Government Survey map of Kaupo. In legend, the body of the chief Heleipawa was taken to Muliwai on the way to being buried on Ahulili, according to an article by historian Samuel Kamakau in the newspaper Ke Au Okoa on Oct. 21, 1869. Writer H. Paulo mentions Muliwai in a lament about the death of "S. P. K." published in Ka Nupepa Kuokoa on Feb. 8, 1862: "Kuu keikiki o ka wai o Muliwai." (My child of the water of Muliwai.) |
