Died in a Foreign Land
("Make I Ka Aina Malihini", Nupepa Kuokoa, May 5, 1877)
On February 20, Kuahu left this world. He was ferried from this side of the black river, where none of us can remain forever. He arrived here around 1864 as a laborer at Port Gamble. He lived here for 12 years and was a hard worker. He was a kiln worker, and left us, his friends here, suddenly. Much effort went into seeking a cure from doctors, but nothing worked. His homeland was Kaupo, Maui. His father is in Pauoa, Honolulu, or else Kiki, if I am not mistaken.
“Farewell to you who have departed,
From your friends of this place.
The moisture of tears,
Is what we can offer.”
